Reaching Kewzing

The nearest major town is Ravangla, just 10kms away and well connected to Gangtok, Siliguri and Bagdogra airport. One can easily get taxis or shared jeeps to Ravangla, and hire a cab from there for the short 30 minute drive to Kewzing. Being a remote village, last mile connectivity can be arranged only through small vehicles.

History

Kewzing finds mention in local legends dating back to pre-Buddhist Bon religion days in Sikkim when mountain and nature worship was mainstream. The first Lepcha clan settlers of Kewzing named it “Namsuing”, meaning “bamboo forest” after the native bamboo groves. When Tibetan Buddhist leaders visited around 16th century, they helped build a small monastery here.
